  1. SCREEN.txt  ver 7.6b        THE APRS MAP SCREEN
  2.  
  3.    This file was written to describe some of the subtleties of the APRS 
  4. main map screen.  There are several distinct areas where information 
  5. appears.  They can be grouped as follows:
  6.

  24.                * APRS supports highres 43 line VGA mode
  25.                  and these lines will be 41, 42 and 43 respectively

  28. CURSOR BOX: Displays the location of the cursor and map range.  
  29.             The range is roughly the Nautical mile radius from the 
  30.             center of the screen to the top of the screen.  
  31.             Toggle range in Kilometers with the CONTROLS-KM command.
  32.  
  33. Bearing/:   If MAPS-PLOTS-RANGE command is given, then the RANGE 
  34.   Range     and BEARING of the cursor from the center of the screen 
  35.             will be shown in STATUTE miles.  The outer concentric 
  36.             circle is equal to the indicated map range scale in STATUTE 
  37.             miles.  The Bearing is shown as the GREAT-CIRCLE bearing. 
  38.             To see the difference, at ranges above 1000 miles, a yellow 
  39.             heading marker shows the actual great circle bearing.
  40.  
  41. Grid Sq:    Shows the Maidenhead Grid Square of the cursor when 
  42.             MAPS-PLOTS-GridSquare command is given.
  43.  
  44. NGR:        Displays the National Grid Reference in ENGLAND only.
  45.  
  46. FLAGS:      For warnings and annoncements as follows:
  47.                 1) Shows weather reports in response to the NEXT-WX command.
  48.                 2) Announces new bulletins have been received
  49.                 3) Announces DX Cluster monitoring mode
  50.              
  51. TIMING/:    Current time, and time to go before next Beacon, Posit, 
  52.  WARNINGS   Object or Message packet is to be transmitted.  Time to go 
  53.             is in minutes until it gets below 99 seconds, and then it 
  54.             shows in seconds.  If the time to go is greater than 9 
  55.             minutes, then '# is shown for 10-19, "# for 20-29, ≡# for 
  56.             30-39, f# for 40-49, and »# for 50-59.  This display is 
  57.             only updated about once every 5 seconds.   Other displays:
  58.                  1) trapped errors (file errors etc...)
  59.                  2) indicator whenever GPS or other data is being fetched
  60.                  3) The box shows purple when your XMTR is disabled.

  62. 23rd LINE:  Used for text input:
  63.             1) All prompts that require more than one character response
  64.             2) The bottom line of the split screen message display
  65.             3) Displays CALLSIGN/DIGIPATH and HEARD log for HOOKED stns
  66.  
  67. 24th LINE:  Captures received packets that are NEW
  68.  
  69. 25th LINE:  All monitored packets.  After displaying the raw packet, it
  70.             then over-writes a 3 character label showing how APRS 
  71.             interpreted the packet:
  72.                BCN:  Processed to the LATEST BEACON page
  73.                POS:  Processed as a POSIT
  74.                MSG:  Message
  75.                APR:  Other APRS formats such as ACKS
  76.                Hrd:  Neither of the above
  77.                GGA,GLL,RMC,VTG: The packet had a NMEA string in it
  78.                To?   means the TO field did not match one of the following
  79.                      APRS,BEACON,CQ,QST,MAIL,SKYWARN,SPCL,GPS
  80.                No>   Couldnt find the packet >TO field identifier
  81.                BLANK:If your packets only blink and then go blank, then
  82.                      there is a problem with extra linefeeds.

  84. Channel Load:  Assuming 36% is the theoretical maximum throughput on a 
  85.                CSMA packet channel with no hidden transmitters, APRS uses
  86.                this 36% figure as 100% channel load.  THat is why you may 
  87.                sometime see figures approaching 300%.
  88.  
  89. No DIGIPEAT... APRS alerts you if it does not see a digipeat of its own
  90.                packets.  Due to collisions, you will occassionally see this
  91.                message.  If you see it all the time, then there is probably 
  92.                something wrong with your station or your UNPROTO path.  
  93.                This is turned off on HF where there should be NO digis.
  94.                
  95. +  symbols:    On maps, these mark the center of each map.  If they appear
  96.                yellow, then that map is visible at the present screen
  97.                range.  If they are white, then you must zoom down one step
  98.                to see the indicated map.  Remember, however, that APRS
  99.                will not use a map until the ENTIRE screen will fit on the
  100.                given map.  That is why the + symbols are useful, by
  101.                zooming in near them, you will see the more detail map
  102.                at its largest practical range.  To see the true extent of
  103.                each map file, use the MAPS-LOCK command and then zoom back
  104.                out.
  105.  
  106. Symbol Colors: White     - Active APRS stations
  107.                Gray      - TNC on-line, but APRS is not running
  108.                Dark Gray - Has not been heard in 2 hours
  109.                Green     - APRS WIDE area digi
  110.                Blue      - WX stations
  111.                Lght Blue - Dead Reckoned station
  112.                Dark Blue - Erased posit (replaced by a new posit)
  113.                RED       - WX alarm values exceeded
  114.                Purple    - OBJECT reported by someone else
  115.                Yellow    - OBJECTS you are uplinking
